Code Enforcement

The responsibility and ambition to establish safer properties and buildings suggest the use of code enforcement and building inspection personnel. The Code Enforcement Officer interprets and enforces state, local, and in some cases, federal regulations or ordinances that apply. Moreover, the Code Enforcement Officer responds to concerns of potential violations cited by local citizens and, upon investigating, takes the appropriate action to remedy those concerns. The Building Inspector interprets and enforces state, local, and in some cases, federal regulations or ordinances that apply to building construction in progress. The Inspector approves issuance of the required permits for the construction of new building structures. He also approves issuance of permits for electrical, plumbing and heating work as well as signage and other site amenities. A host of regulations, including the Zoning Resolution, building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and manufactured home codes establish the basis for enforcement. Once the Inspector issues a permit, and construction or installation begins, the residential or commercial construction or installation remains subject to inspection until completion. Upon final inspection and approval, the Building Official issues a Certificate of Occupancy (CO.). You may find documentation of enforceable codes here.
